SMALLER IS BETTER

It's natural to think the bigger end would provide more power than the Thumb Runner end. The reason it doesn't is to do with the shape of the Thumb Runner end and the fact that the bigger end is used sideways when used sitting or kneeling instead of vertically as it is when standing.

We found that the bigger end does not get totally immersed during a stroke whereas the smaller end does so the surface area of the two ends contacting the water is the similar.

Another factor is that the Thumb Runner end has been designed to provide maximum power whilst the bigger end is shaped better for vertical paddling than horizontal.

That's not to say that you lose anything because of this, due to the fact that you can complete way more strokes if you don't have to swap your paddle from side to side.

Remember also that when you're kneeling with a standard paddle, it's not necessarily going to be entering the water at an optimum angle and the effort to push it through the water is greater when kneeling.

All this means that we can make the Thumb Runner end smaller to suit stand up paddling and balance the output to the bigger end.

It's all about getting you home safely.
